With lots of talk regarding the state of the British Film Industry following an article in the Guardian http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2009/aug/30/jason-solomons-british-film-industry, where do Britflicks really rate in the world league of cinema?
Currently I believe that the British film industry is stuck in a mire with little chance of getting out due to unimaginative directors, investors and film agencies who between them constantly churn out poor quality gangster flicks, depressing drama’s or cringing comedies, anyone seen Happy Go Lucky?
Where has the Art gone? …. Sure make a depressing drama’s but please use a little creativity like say Darren Aronofsky’s ‘Requiem For A Dream’, it can be done as without question we have the acting talent, we just fall flat on our faces when it comes to the so called creative minds behind the camera.
I set up Britflick a few years ago to try and give in some small way positive publicity to British film, not an easy task in the current climate of not so much the credit crunch but the creative crunch. Don’t get me wrong we do have some fantastically creative talent, buy we also have an over subscribed club of people who just don’t do it.
Currently we are compiling a list of ‘films that blew you away’ and thus far we have not had a single suggestion of a true 100% British film to date, which sums it up really. When did you last watch a Britflick that really done it for you and totally ‘Blew You Away’?
Anyone can compile a top 25 of British films; the important question is where does that top 25 rate when you compare it to the rest of the world? because that’s who we are competing with and that’s who we have to beat to survive.
