THE MAN WITH FOUR LEGS is this year’s film to die for (literally) as it takes a unique look at the role of the media as it walks the fine line between reporting fact and satisfying our thirst for entertainment.
Manoeuvring between reality and fiction, a young team of documentary filmmakers explore the life of an amnesiac fantasist called James. After receiving a mysterious and severe blow to the head, James endures a fractured existence, plagued by both his ambiguous past and a bizarre present. As a consequence, he suffers the apparent delusion that he is the husband of a woman who claims to have never met him. As the film crew seek to uncover the mystery surrounding James, they too find themselves drawn deeper into the dangers of his plight, in this surreal tale of perception, identity and the perilous nature of reality.
Writer, director and producer, Ed Christmas, vividly remembers visiting his great-grandmother in his youth while she suffered from Alzheimer’s, a disease which at times rendered her unable to recognise her own family. It was a heartbreaking experience that stayed with him, later prompting him as a filmmaker to explore the problematic relationship between memory, time, and the concept of reality.
At a time when mental health is such a pressing social and health issue, the film not only provides entertainment, but offers insight to our attitude towards those suffering form mental health issues and their role in society. THE MAN WITH FOUR LEGS also raises questions on the moral ambiguity that the media can face when balancing journalistic objectivity with common decency and compassion, and exploiting a subject for the purpose of entertainment.
‘It seemed appropriate to approach themes of perception and reality through a group of characters who, being documentary filmmakers, deal with and are creators of a kind of perception and false reality as careers. My intention with this point of view style filmmaking also serves to allow us as an audience to, in a sense, participate more directly with James’ struggles, for better or worse. I am very humbled to have been able to make this film, and it is with great pleasure that, with the help of a wonderful cast and crew, we can share with you this tragicomic tale about living our lives in one sense in “reality” and in another firmly in the world of fantasy.’ Ed Christmas, Writer, Director and Producer.
The film boasts a talented, up and coming cast and crew including Richard Southgate (Young Dracula) and Daniel Ormerod (Northern Soul). Following the unique approach of the film, Ed Christmas and fellow producer Stuart Hall decided to self-release the film directly to iTunes and Amazon Video on Demand, enabling them to have complete creative and financial freedom over how their audience experienced the release of this poignant and topical film.
