Written and directed by Paul Bickel, ‘OUR HAPPY PLACE’ is a psychological horror set during the emotional isolation of the pandemic. The story follows Raya, a lonely woman caring for her bedridden husband, who begins experiencing disturbing nightmares. Each morning, she wakes in a forest, sinking deeper into freshly dug graves. As reality begins to blur, supernatural forces torment her and she uncovers a dark secret buried both in the woods—and within herself.
Filmed during quarantine, the production initially featured only Bickel and lead actor Raya Miles, shooting locally near their home outside Los Angeles. As restrictions lifted, Tracie Thoms (Looper, Rent, The Devil Wears Prada) and Eugene Byrd (8 Mile, American Horror Story) joined the cast. The film's tight, intimate camerawork mirrors the claustrophobia of lockdown, adding to its psychological intensity.
‘OUR HAPPY PLACE’ marks the feature film debut for both Paul Bickel as director and co-leads Raya Miles and Paul Bickel as actors.
