The new 4K restoration of 'BLACK CHARIOT', the rediscovered 1971 American independent film from writer, producer and director Robert L. Goodwin, opens at Anthology Film Archives in New York on July 10, 2026, before expanding to select theaters nationwide.
Long feared lost after its original premiere, 'BLACK CHARIOT' has been restored by the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, with funding from the National Film Preservation Foundation.
The film stars screen legend Bernie Casey in his first starring role and features an early performance from Barbara O. Jones, later associated with the L.A. Rebellion film movement.
Shot on both 35mm and video, 'BLACK CHARIOT' follows the social awakening of a character referred to as “the drifter”. The story opens around a tense meeting involving an underground Black Power group and moves between past and present as Goodwin explores identity, politics and personal awakening.
The restoration brings a long-underseen work of American independent cinema back to the screen more than five decades after its 1971 premiere at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium.
