'THESE VIOLENT DELIGHTS', a visually ambitious dance feature film from Scottish Ballet, Forest of Black and Tull Stories, will open in UK and Irish cinemas from 21 October 2026.
Directed by Christopher Hampson and Oscar Sansom, the film is an unconventional retelling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, exploring identity, love and transformation through movement.
The film follows Juliet, who awakens from a fever dream as the lines between hallucination and memory begin to blur. Cinema and dance collide in a kaleidoscopic journey of belonging, defiance and self-discovery.
Featuring Kayla-Maree Tarantolo as Juliet and Ishan Mahabir-Stokes as Romeo, alongside Scottish Ballet artists, 'THESE VIOLENT DELIGHTS' marks Scottish Ballet’s first major feature-length film.
The film will have its World Premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival on 14 August, before going on general cinema release in the UK and Ireland from 21 October 2026.
Choreography is by Julia Cheng, Morgann Runacre-Temple, Myles Thatcher, Sophie Laplane, Nicholas Shoesmith and Andrea Azzari. The film features production and costume design by Sami Fendall, cinematography by David Liddell, music by John Lemke, sound design by William Aikman, and editing by Oscar Sansom.
'THESE VIOLENT DELIGHTS' has a runtime of 70 minutes and is rated 15 by the BBFC.
