BFI Distribution has released a brand-new trailer for 'TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT', the 1981 Madness music film newly restored in 4K by the BFI.
Originally released in 1981, 'TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT' tells the brilliantly nostalgic story of how Madness, one of Britain’s most successful and enduring bands, first came together.
The film returns to UK and Irish cinemas on 2 October 2026, with previews from 30 September. A Restoration World Premiere plus Q&A with members of Madness and director Dave Robinson will take place at BFI Southbank’s NFT1 on 30 September. A BFI Blu-ray/DVD Limited Edition follows on 19 October.
Produced and directed by Stiff Records supremo Dave Robinson, 'TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT' was made without a written script, using improvised dialogue and real events to recreate the band’s early journey.
The film follows seven mates from Camden Town in the late 1970s as they leave jobs behind, go through line-up changes, rows, laughs and the evolution of their distinctive ska-pop Nutty Sound.
The classic Madness line-up appears as themselves: Graham McPherson, better known as Suggs, Mark Bedford, Lee Thompson, Carl Smyth, Dan Woodgate, Chris Foreman and Mike Barson. Also appearing are John Hasler, Andrew Chalk, Ian Tokins, Simon Birdsall and Clive Langer.
The film features original locations including Camden’s legendary Dublin Castle, alongside now-lost north London locations such as Rock On Records and Pathway Studios.
The soundtrack includes both live and studio recordings, with Madness tracks including 'ONE STEP BEYOND', 'NIGHT BOAT TO CAIRO', 'MY GIRL', 'BAGGY TROUSERS' and 'EMBARRASSMENT'.
The new BFI 4K digital restoration has been created using the only surviving 35mm prints, with the original Dolby stereo audio mix. The release also marks the film’s first ever Blu-ray release.
