'THE GIFT (FANTAISIE-IMPROMPTU)', the debut feature from Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Sunny Zhao, is now available digitally on Apple TV, Amazon, Google Play and YouTube.
Twelve years in the making, the fantasy drama combines music, memory and mystery in the story of a gifted young pianist and a forgotten instrument with a hidden history.
When ten-year-old Abigail Phillips discovers an abandoned piano deep in the woods on her father's farm, she finds more than a new passion for music – she uncovers a mystery spanning generations.
Following the sudden death of her mother, Abigail finds solace and purpose at the piano and quickly reveals an exceptional natural talent.
Recognising her ability, her father sends her to Paris to pursue a future as a concert pianist while he begins investigating the mysterious origins of the instrument.
As Abigail's reputation grows, her father uncovers a history of loss, longing and lives quietly connected by the piano, revealing how an apparently ordinary object can carry an extraordinary past.
Told through intertwined timelines, 'THE GIFT (FANTAISIE-IMPROMPTU)' explores creativity, memory, artistic ambition, resilience and the power of music to connect people across generations.
The film marks the feature directorial debut of Sunny Zhao, who also serves as co-writer, cinematographer and editor. Inspired by Zhao's own background as a musician, the film was shot in anamorphic format and uses changing landscapes, slow-motion sequences and rich colours to create a dreamlike visual style.
The cast includes Emma Barnett, Elyse Dufour, Gordon Bass, Garrette Chester and Slash Coleman.
'THE GIFT (FANTAISIE-IMPROMPTU)' became available digitally on October 26, 2026, with Fandango at Home availability scheduled from November 5.
